It was the summer of 1971. While Garcia remixed Aoxomoxoa, Phil remixed Anthem, and they both got reissued.
However, while Garcia's new mix became the "canonical" Aoxomoxoa, Phil decided that his remix wasn't as good as the original. I don't think it was put out on CD, so I've never heard it, but I've read that it doesn't sound much different from the original.

Phil did mention that because of all the copying, the Anthem tapes ended up sounding quite muffled.

I wonder if anyone has tried to identify all the sources for the Anthem Alligator>Caution. I imagine it would be pretty daunting: "this 30 seconds is from 2/14/68, then the next 45 seconds, the right channel is from 11/11/67 and the left channel from 3/16/68, with a 10-second fade-in from 2/24/68," etc...

Amen. I've recently finished combining what I like best of Side 1 of the remix with the remaining portions of the original, specifically Cryptical Envelopment, plus just the louder drums intro to Quadlibet For Tender Feet, and grafting on BIG chord ending, along with a bit of what leads up to it. No way will I trade clearer vocals for those circularly meandering drums and other effects. I also smoothed one rough splice on the original.

Side 2 is up next, but I need to more closely compare both versions. Then it's on to extended versions of both Side 1 and Side 2, if possible. There's a lot of material floating around for the published list of live material source dates.

Someone compiled this list and I haven't checked it for accuracy:

- The post-vocals "Alligator jam section" is from the Carousel Ballroom 14 February 1968 show.

- The "Alligator" vocal reprise is taken from 11/10/67 at the Shine Exposition Center.

- The skeletal framework of "Caution (Do Not Stop On Tracks)" dates from the Los Angeles Shrine Auditorium show on 11/10/67 and the Carousel Ballroom on March 31, 1968.

- Extended excerpts from two shows at Kings Beach Bowl in Lake Tahoe, CA on 2/23-24/68 provided music for the album (most notably the car horn heard at the end of "Caution (Do Not Stop On Tracks)").

- The the verse(s) section of "The Other One" portion of "That's It For The Other One" as well as the first half of the "New Potato Caboose" jam (after the vocals) hail from 3/17/68.
